Will you email your MP to demand action to protect our health from the adverse effects of climate change?

Will you email your MP to demand action to protect our health from the adverse effects of climate change?

Australian individuals, families and communities are at risk of health impacts from heatwaves, extreme weather, and changing patterns of disease associated with global warming.

But unlike many nations, Australia is actively undermining international progress, and has no national strategy to respond to this serious risk.

A national approach is needed to ensure the community and health professionals are ready to respond to these risks.

Australia's response to climate change must address the urgent need for emissions reductions to reduce risks to health, as well as take advantage of the opportunities to improve health through low carbon strategies, including clean renewable energy and transport systems.

There are many benefits to health, as well as environmental and economic benefits, from cutting emissions.

In May 2021, 60+ health and medical groups wrote to the Prime Minister, the leader of the Opposition and other relevant health and environment ministers with three key asks to move Australia from laggard to leader when it comes to climate and health:

  • Prioritise health in the context of Australia’s Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement
  • Commit to the decarbonisation of the healthcare sector by 2040
  • Implement a National Strategy on Climate, Health and Wellbeing for Australia

Now we want to show that the Australian community backs this call. Will you email your MP and ask them to work with their colleagues to make it a reality?
